MEET THE DESIGNER
A QUICK WIT AND SHARP EYE KEEP THIS INNOVATIVE NEW YORK DESIGNER IN CONSTANT DEMAND
You earned a law and accounting degree. Why did you choose to pursue a career in interior design? I wanted to do something more creative without compromising my lifestyle. Since my family has a history of building/restoration and drama, interior design seemed perfect. What factors do you take into consideration when working in the Hamptons? Architecture: I like projects that are different. Traffic: I like installing off-season. It's easier when it is empty. I can eat and drink anywhere and there are less police. I tend to drive quickly. Where do you stay when you are out here? I stay with friends. I can't get beyond the idea that with a house I would have something else to take care of, as I do this for a living for clients. You designed the master bath for Sherle Wagner at this year's Kips Bay Show House. How do you design baths for clients? For European clients, we use large marble tubs from Sherle Wagner. Since the men bathe, the tubs need to be long and deep. I love science and modern technology, so I use the most updated products, even for classic spaces. Bathrooms are like jewel boxes to me, so I love cramming in the details. They are really fun rooms to do. What shocks you? On a national level, that Lynne Cheney hasn't planted any wildflowers. On a state level, that people will hire a designer with no education or experience and that the business isn't licensed. What's a favorite scene in the Hamptons? I love the HOV lane—Homosexuals on Vacation. Also, I love watching a summer blockbuster at a beach theater. Everyone lazy and tan kicking back for the big explosions. What is a luxury you could not live without? Anything that improves my quality of life. I have a table set up for my masseur, acupuncturist and chiropractor, but I don't think these count as luxuries if you are a decorator. How do you enjoy your free time? I just finished Kips Bay, I'm doing a line for Stark and other projects include the Café Carlyle and the largest townhouse in London. Who has free time? But I do like to look at the ocean or travel and explore. What inspires you? The individual. I tend to look for items created by a single or small group of people. I love the future and its possibilities. Everything changes so quickly and there are so many smart, talented, good people out there. The best is yet to come.
