THREE TIPS FOR CREATING A FORMAL LIVING ROOM THAT'S NOT TOO FORMAL- For upholstery and window dressings, a softer palette can create a sense of warmth. For the Idea House, Brady Design used light, all-natural fabrics from Ralph Lauren, Rogers & Goffigon, China Seas and their own private label, as well as woven natural grass reed shades from Hartmann & Forbes.
- Unusual antiques can create a playful elegance. Brady and Biscardi found an 11-foot, 19th-century French table and a ca.-1880 French six-armed chandelier to anchor the room.
- Bright overhead lighting can be harsh. Instead, use table lamps, which "create a soft, warm glow," says Biscardi.
