2007 HC&G IDEA HOUSE TOUR
"From the start, I knew I wanted to do this room in high style," says Steven Walsh. "This is very much a reflection of my taste." In fact, the room, awash in cornflower blue, gray and black, features several pieces Walsh designed, including the sleek platform bed upholstered with Jim Thompson fabric, minimalist bedside lamps with angular black shades and a pair of rock crystal lamps flanking a Line Vautrin mirror from the Wayne Schwartz Gallery. Even so, Walsh admits that the 1960s Maison Jansen ormolu and ocean blue lacquered night stands and commode "set the tone for everything else in the room."
The gold accents, like rays of sun shining through an overcast sky, carry through in the Gabrielli Crespi chandelier and colorful vases on one of the night stands, which are reflected in mirrored folding screens from John Salibello Antiques. "They were in storage but I hadn't seen them in years," Walsh says about the vases. "I just thought they would work well here." The opalescent Jim Thompson curtains, alpaca fur throw on the bed—"everyone needs one," Walsh says—and pedigree pieces like a circa-1950 Jacques Adnet leather armchair add to the air of understated luxury. The space is grounded by a white wool and linen rug by Beauvais Carpets.
