MEET THE DESIGNER
A BRITISH INTERIOR DESIGNER, TABLETOP GURU AND AUTHOR INSPIRES CREATIVELY
You design everything from interiors to rugs, fabric, even tabletop. What defines your style? The interior design world knows me for my love of textures and neutral colors, as well as an East-meets-West philosophy. I use straight lines and a symmetric approach, focusing on creating a sense of order and tranquility. Recently I started to introduce a lot of round shapes into my work as well as splashes of color.
Where do you live and what is your own home like? Last year I moved south of the river Thames. I grew up and lived in Chelsea until then, and this was a real change. I found a loft-style apartment and added a fantastic roof terrace. My team turned it around in three months and the result is amazing. I absolutely adore living there. My own home is always the best showcase for my work. What do you enjoy about working in the States? The States can be really exciting as the style is so different. People are just starting to open up to minimalist and eclectic design. It is great to witness. Who or what has had a profound impact on your work? Nature and memory are my biggest inspirations. You just designed your second line for Wedgwood. What is it like? It's a line of urban china, accessories and serving vessels in three different patterns. Clouds and Waves have a distinct Japanese style. Ripple is boldly elegant, featuring strong intersecting, platinum loops. What do you think are key elements for entertaining with style? A great space to entertain in, a lot of attention to detail, good food, good music and the right crowd to appreciate and enjoy all of it. Do you have any secret tips or suggestions? Make table decorations fun and innovative. It doesn't have to be expensive! I love using leaves and rope as napkin rings, they add organic texture to the table and are very easy to do. What is your take on e-mail invites? Hard copy invitations give an event more etiquette and come across as a lot more personal. Have you attended or hosted any special events lately? The next big event I am hosting is in September for the London launch of my book, Home: Concept to Reality. It gives away a lot of my design secrets and I was worried at first, but I wanted to give something back. I am very proud of it and can't wait to see it on the shelves.
