DIRT

Bloom Town

A nest of three Sedum makinoi serendipitously planted in one pot is irresistible, and a beautiful selection of the variegated Pierus (Andromeda) 'Flaming Silver' is exactly the inflection every garden needs. On the high-decor side of things, there is a new line of very sleek outdoor furniture: rocking orange mesh chaises, handsome teak tables with built-in Lazy Susans, marine-grade stainless steel lounges and hammocks that look like sultans' tents. They are by Royal Botania from Belgium and can be had only at Marders. And do check out Charlie Marder's son Silas' hot art gallery while you are there.

What a selection this season at Water Mill's Eastland Farms. Mike de Rosa has culled a magical selection of Japanese maples, varied and affordable. A few zingy long-needle Japanese black pines will zen up your garden instantaneously for only $199. From droopy and dramatic conifers of assertive size to teeny Irish and Scotch mosses, it feels like a new place.

I am all for planting throughout the summer, rushing out to the nurseries and filling in the "holes" of late May, mid-July and so on, but let's face it: now is the moment. You have enough clothes. Go garden shopping!
