Windows on the World

The owner wanted all traces of nature left outside. Guests can swim in the ocean or the elegant infinity pool, but they are not welcome indoors with wet bathing suits or sandy feet. He had Horst design a double cabana next to the pool with an outdoor shower, double Jacuzzi, changing room, bath, laundry room, outdoor kitchen and large, screened-in porch for al fresco dining. ("I got very involved," the client says.)

He also gave Horst the freedom to create some unique "moments," the most dramatic, perhaps, being the 600-square-foot, 38-foot-tall entry tower sheathed in white metal slats. It screens the garage and a hidden stairway that takes guests to the five-by-10-foot-tall front door. Horst designed it with two enormous glass panels that are filled, like a sandwich, with old-fashioned multicolored marbles. Among them, he had inserted, in royal blue marbles, an "H" for the owner's last name.

"We don't base our work on the size of a project," Horst says reflectively. "If a client is interested in doing something unique, we are definitely interested in working with that client." And this particular client couldn't be happier.
